Even though our Rough Collie has a cheeky tendency to steal our coasters(!), we’ve made lots of them as they’re a really quick DIY project – and make great gifts!
A set of four map coasters will only take you an hour or two to make (plus drying time) and it’s as easy as cut, glue and seal!
DIY Map Coasters Supply List
- 4×4 inch ceramic tiles (if you’ve got some old kitchen tiles lying around then this is an easy way to repurpose them!)
- Maps (vintage maps, road atlases and even London Underground tube maps work well for this)
- Scissors
- Mod Podge
- Craft paint brush
- Acrylic sealant
- Coaster feet or felt
How To Make Map Coasters – Cute DIY Map Gift

1. Cut your maps to the size of your tiles leaving a little leftover on each side to cover the tiles’ edges.
REMEMBER: Choose a focal point for your tile whether it’s a place, landmark or just interesting map detail.
2. Paint mod podge onto your tile using your craft brush, ensuring an even coating across the whole tile.
3. Lay your map on top and glue it down. Don’t forget the edges!
4. Paint another layer of mod podge over your map; it’ll dry clear and help protect it.
5. Leave to dry completely (roughly two hours) and then coat the front of your tile with acrylic sealant and leave to dry again.
6. Add coaster feet or felt to the bottom of your tile and it’s time for tea!

You can make them in exactly the same way as your map coasters; this time ensuring:
- Your tile is white or painted white
- Your photo is cut smaller than your tile (leaving roughly 1 cm on each side) so the white tile shows through on all sides (mimicking a polaroid photo)
- (Optional) Write the place and date underneath the photo with a Write-4-All marker pen
