I’m so excited to share my brand new junk journal challenge with you. It’s called “The Wheel of Inspiration” and I reckon it’ll keep us motivated and inspired year-round!

Using a fancied-up prize wheel, I’ll pull two glittery stars from the wheel every month to reveal prompts for a “Star Project” and a “Wildcard Project”. You can choose to do both prompts separately, just one of them or combine the prompts to make something.

My fancied up prize wheel aka “The Wheel of Inspiration”

There are already lots of challenges out there for making ephemera and embellishments (I’ve even created a few of my own!)

Buuut… there aren’t many challenges focused on actually making journals and folios.

This is where “The Wheel of Inspiration” comes in!

And the best bit? Not only will the prompts change every single month, but they’re also open to interpretation, so you can head down whichever creative path you choose. There’s no right or wrong way to approach each month’s prompts.

Sound fun? Here’s how you can get involved…

Introducing “The Wheel of Inspiration” Challenge & Our First Prompts

The Wheel Of Inspiration Challenge ~ Month 1 ~ NEW Junk Journal Challenge

✨✨✨

FYI… spoilers ahead!

Drumroll, please…

The first “Star Project” is an upcycled cover! This means we’ll make a journal or folio by upcycling something to make the cover.

You could use food packaging like cereal boxes, biscuit boxes, or even cough drop boxes to make fun mini journals.

With this type of packaging, you’ll have a front and back cover and a spine ready to go. You’d be surprised how many fun and beautiful journals you can make from packaging!

Another option is to upcycle a book you no longer want or need. Grab a book from your shelf, remove the pages and you’ve got a ready-made journal cover. Here’s a video to help you with that!

Alternatively, you can also use envelopes, paper bags, fabric scraps, paper scraps, book pages and even collage masterboards. These are all forms of upcycling.

But wait, there’s more!

We’ve also got the “Wildcard” prompt, which is an optional bonus project. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even combine the two prompts.

Okay, so the “Wildcard” idea this month is a No-Sew Project.

This could mean skipping the traditional needle-and-thread binding for something more simple. For example, you could use elastics to bind your journal, or maybe even create a folio that doesn’t have any pages. Thus, no sewing is needed.

Alternatively, you can view this prompt as not requiring any hand or machine sewing.

How I’m Approaching This Month’s Prompts

I’ve upcycled a mince pie box to make a beautiful Winter Woods folio journal.

You’d never know this was once a mince pie box!

As for the “Wildcard”, I’m going to save that for a little later in the month, time permitting.

If I have any supplies or paper left over, I’ll make a mini folio using an envelope, which won’t have any pages sewn in – just fun and interactive flip outs and pockets!

Why Did I Create “The Wheel of Inspiration” Challenge?

I love a good challenge. They’re such a fun way to keep us inspired and motivated.

I’ve created lots of challenges in the past (Junk Journal Bingo might be my favourite), but they always focused on ephemera and embellishments.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course.

But the list of journals and folios I want to make is getting longer by the day. So this year, I thought it was about time I tick off some of those ideas.

However, when I looked at the list, I felt overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start. Sound familiar?

So, I wrote all the ideas down on the back of some glittery stars and thought wouldn’t it be fun to pick one or two out at random every month?

Not only will this be a fun surprise for both you and me, but it also means I feel less overwhelmed. I know all my ideas will come up at some point… just not all at once.

This is the same approach I’ve taken with my pile of unfinished projects where I’ve divided my huge list into smaller ones. My goal to finish all my projects before the summer is now far less daunting or overwhelming!

Junk Journal Toolkit

📦 What do I need to get started?

If you’ve got paper, glue, scissors and something to bind your pages with (like a needle, thread and an awl or pokey tool), you’re good to go! Check out my essentials vs. nice-to-have supply list for more info.

🤯 I’m overwhelmed by tutorials and ideas. Where should I start?

Start with my free Mini Junk Journal Masterclass. It walks you through the process step-by-step. Even though it focuses on a mini journal, the same tips apply to any size journal.

❓ I don’t understand the terminology. Can you help?

Absolutely! My A–Z Junk Journal Glossary breaks down all those confusing terms and acronyms. Jargon be gone!

🪡 How do you keep your binding neat?

I use my bookbinding cradle to line up my holes and avoid punching too far through the pages. Smaller holes give a neater and more secure binding, and I use this thin upholstery thread for a cleaner finish.

🧵 Do I need a sewing machine?

Not necessarily! A basic sewing machine is helpful for making fabric-covered journals, but strong fabric glue can work just as well. If you stick to paper-based journals or folios, you don’t need one at all. I like the sewn look and making fabric-based journals, so I personally use a simple machine (similar to this) that’s lasted me over 10 years – it’s a trusty part of my toolkit.

🖼️ What digital papers do you use?

I use a mix of my own designs and other favourites. You can see examples here. New to digitals? Check out my mega bundle for a big saving on some of my designs or sign up for my Mahalo Clubhouse membership to get brand new digitals sent to you every month.

📜 What’s the best paper for printing digitals?

I use this 100 GSM Presentation Paper for vibrant and high-quality prints.

🖨️ What printer do you recommend?

I love my Epson Ecotank. It’s affordable, reliable and the ink lasts ages. I used to spend £30 a month on ink – now I refill just once or twice a year for under £30. Check out my detailed review of EcoTank printers to see how much you could save!

🖇️ What glues do you use?

My go-tos are Collall All Purpose, Cosmic Shimmer and Beacon 3-in-1. Here’s how I use each one.

📖 What books are best for junk journaling?

I love using second-hand nature and botanical books. Here are some great titles to look for next time you’re thrifting.
