If you sell or give your junk journals away, you might want to include a “note from the bookmaker” inside it to explain how the new owner can use the journal. This is especially helpful if they’ve never heard about or seen junk journals before.

While there are various letters from other people available for you to download, I wanted to write one using my own words to include in my journals.

Welcome to your one-of-a-kind, handcrafted junk journal!

I’ve lovingly created this journal to inspire your creativity and serve as a canvas for your thoughts, memories, dreams and treasured keepsakes.

It’s made from found, recycled and repurposed materials, such as packaging, junk mail, random pieces of paper, scraps and much more, which means this journal is truly one-of-a-kind.

Please know there are no rules for using this journal – only possibilities.

You can use it to capture your daily thoughts, write poems, create art, record your most treasured memories, or use it as a planner.

While every page and part of this journal tells a story, it’s time for you to write your own chapters by adding to the journal and using it however you want.

There are no rules!

Thank you for choosing a journal that celebrates individuality and creativity. I hope it brings you as much joy using it as I had making it.

How To Download & Use My Letters

I’ve designed and created several versions of my letter, which you’re welcome to download and print for free here. There’s space at the top and bottom for you to personalise the letter (to, from, etc).

There’s a simple text version, which you can print onto whatever paper you choose. Why not try printing it on tea-dyed or faux tea-dyed paper for a vintage feel?

Alternatively, I’ve created some other versions, which already have a vintage feel (no tea-staining necessary). I’ve also provided some neutral papers you can use to print on the backs of your letters – or even use them as journal pages!

Whichever version you decide to use, I hope you and whoever owns your journals in the future find the letters helpful and inspiring.

📦 What do I need to get started?

If you’ve got paper, glue, scissors and something to bind your pages with (like a needle, thread and an awl or pokey tool), you’re good to go! Check out my essentials vs. nice-to-have supply list for more info.

🤯 I’m overwhelmed by tutorials and ideas. Where should I start?

Start with my free Mini Junk Journal Masterclass. It walks you through the process step-by-step. Even though it focuses on a mini journal, the same tips apply to any size journal.

❓ I don’t understand the terminology. Can you help?

Absolutely! My A–Z Junk Journal Glossary breaks down all those confusing terms and acronyms. Jargon be gone!

🪡 How do you keep your binding neat?

I use my bookbinding cradle to line up my holes and avoid punching too far through the pages. Smaller holes give a neater and more secure binding, and I use this thin upholstery thread for a cleaner finish.

🧵 Do I need a sewing machine?

Not necessarily! A basic sewing machine is helpful for making fabric-covered journals, but strong fabric glue can work just as well. If you stick to paper-based journals or folios, you don’t need one at all. I like the sewn look and making fabric-based journals, so I personally use a simple machine (similar to this) that’s lasted me over 10 years – it’s a trusty part of my toolkit.
