Frequently Asked Questions

This workshop is beginner-friendly. I estimate it should take you around 1-2 days to complete (depending on your skill level and journal-making experience).

There are 7 tutorials to watch or read; over 2 hours of watch time in total. These tutorials will guide you through the entire process from start to finish. Of course, you can decorate your journal however you like – as seen in the other students’ finished journals above.

You’ll also have access to a free copy of my Driftwood Dreams Printables, plus you’ll find some other relevant tips and advice inside the workshop.

This workshop is beginner-friendly and will likely still suit you even if this is the first journal you’re making. My workshop will guide you through every step of the process – from constructing the journal and decorating it to binding the pages in.

If you’re experienced with making journals, you probably won’t need to watch the lesson on how to bind the journal. But there are still a couple of unique things about this project for experienced crafters to enjoy, such as adding the flip-out and cutting the window in the front of the journal.

While there are lots of fabulous tutorials out there, this workshop not only guides you through every step of the process, but it also comes with printable papers included.

That means you can make the journal in exactly the same way as me – without the need for fancy or expensive supplies.

For this workshop, you’ll need:

– 1x window envelope (A5)
– 1x envelope the same size as above
– 1x small envelope (A6 ish)
– Cardstock
– Paper for your signature
– Ribbon for your closure
– Gauze or cheesecloth
– Optional embellishments e.g. buttons, charms, fabric, crochet, etc
– My Driftwood Dreams Printables (supplied for free as part of the workshop)

You’ll also need basic supplies such as:

– Scissors (for paper and fabric)
– Glue (for paper and fabric)
– Bookbinding supplies (needle, waxed thread, awl, etc)
– Distress ink and dauber
– Crop-a-dile or a hole punch/hole reinforcers
– Pencil and ruler

While there’s no standalone Facebook group that comes with this workshop, you’re more than welcome to ask questions about it in my free Facebook group (House of Mahalo’s Crafting Circle). I’m in there most days and am more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

Once your payment has gone through, you’ll receive an email inviting you to log into the course online, which is hosted by my course platform, Thrivecart.

While you can access your courses from any device (just as long as you’re connected to the Internet), I recommend using a computer. That way, the tutorial videos will be a larger size and easier to follow along with.

Due to the digital nature of my courses, I’m unable to provide refunds.

But if you have any issues accessing the workshop, please email me at justine@houseofmahalo.com. I’ll always do my best to help you.

I’m only too happy to help! Send me an email at justine@houseofmahalo.com and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

Hey there, I’m Justine!

I’m so happy you found me and my little part of the crafting world.

I first discovered junk journals in early 2021 and I started my blog and YouTube channel all about junk journals in the summer of 2021.

I now help thousands of crafters make beautiful nature-inspired journals they love.

What sets me apart from other tutors and content creators within the junk journal world is that I believe you can love this craft without needing fancy tools/supplies or having to use complicated techniques.

I’m all about keeping things fuss-free, care-free and on a budget. I think simple can still mean beautiful!

If you’re ever in any doubt whether you want to join me for your crafting journey, my favourite motto is: “DONE is better than perfect.” I’m here to prove why this is the most powerful motto you can have when it comes to crafting and making journals.
